How to choose your interior design style

Wondering how to choose your interior design style? Here are some tips from property experts based on Sydney’s beautiful Northern Beaches.

Congratulations on buying a home! It’s an amazing feeling to finally walk into a place you can call your own.

After settlement comes the exciting part; setting up your home, just the way you like it. However, one question a lot of clients ask us about is how to choose your interior design style.

It’s lovely to come home to a place which looks great, feels comfortable and has a ‘flow’ when it comes to your personal interior style. Here are some questions to ask yourself when determining the vibe you want.

What style is the home itself?

It makes sense to add retro interior touches to a home that has a feel of the 1960s or 70s and you can do this without going overboard.

Likewise, a beachy bungalow probably suits a coastal-style interior, with light colours and organic materials like timber and bamboo.

If you have purchased a starter apartment you are likely to have more of a blank slate to work with. Contemporary and uncluttered, or a ‘Scandi’ look is likely to work well in a smaller place. Add some touches of colour to make the home your own.

Do your research

Have a good scroll through sites like Pinterest or Houzz and create boards for kitchens, living rooms and bathrooms that catch your eye. You’ll soon notice you are gravitating towards a particular style, whether it is vibrant and eclectic, industrial or mid-century modern.

Pick a palate

Do you want mostly neutrals or bursts of colour? And which shades make you feel most at home?

The great news is that this is your home… you can do whatever you want when it comes to painting, hanging pictures or remodelling.

Cosy or sleek?

A cosy home has lots of comfy soft furnishings and knick-knacks to remind you of friends, family, travel and good times.

If you want more of a minimalist look, you’ll be going for clean, straight lines and lots of open space.

How to choose your interior design style: Think practical

You may love a blinged-out look with chandeliers and glass tables but is it going to work with your bank account and your lifestyle? If you have children, the answer is likely to be no!

Keep your budget and the people who live in your home in mind when you choose a style.

Select one piece and work around it

It could be a beautiful floor rug, ornate lamp, artwork or a piece of furniture you have been saving to buy for years.

Reflect on the style of this piece and find other accessories and soft furnishings to match it.

You may even wish to look to your wardrobe for inspiration. After all, the things you wear are some of the best reflections of your personality. Dive in and look for favourite dresses, coats or jewellery that you love.

Work with an interior stylist

If you want everything to work beautifully, an interior stylist can be a worthy investment. This professional will talk to you about colours, moods, styles and budget before helping to beautify your space.
